Hey there, Maryland and Delaware neighbors! Spring is in the air, and for many of us, that means it’s time to tackle the grime that winter left behind. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of pulling into your driveway and seeing a sparkling clean home. But before you head out to the garage and fire up that rental pressure washer, we need to have a quick heart-to-heart.
At Chesapeake Hydro-Wash, we see it all the time: well-intentioned homeowners trying to boost their curb appeal, only to end up with striped siding, dead bushes, or even worse, water damage inside their walls. House washing looks easy on those viral "oddly satisfying" videos, but there’s a lot of science and safety involved in doing it right.
To help you protect your investment, we’ve put together a list of the seven most common mistakes people make when washing their homes and, more importantly, how you can fix them.
1. Using Too Much Pressure (The "Blast It" Mentality)
This is the number one mistake we see. Most people think that more pressure equals a better clean. In reality, high pressure is often the enemy of your home's exterior.
- The Mistake: Using a high-PSI setting on delicate surfaces like vinyl siding, cedar shakes, or stucco. This can strip paint, etch concrete, and literally "inject" water behind your siding.
- The Fix: Use a soft wash approach. Soft washing relies on specialized cleaning solutions to break down mold, algae, and dirt, followed by a low-pressure rinse. If you must use a pressure washer, start with the widest spray tip (usually the white or green one) and keep your distance.

2. Using the Wrong Cleaning Solutions
If you’re just using plain water or, even worse, harsh industrial degreasers on your siding, you’re asking for trouble.
- The Mistake: Using chemicals that are too caustic or not using a surfactant (a "clinging" agent). Harsh chemicals can corrode your window tracks, kill your grass, and even void the warranty on your siding.
- The Fix: Choose biodegradable, eco-friendly cleaning solutions specifically designed for house washing. These solutions are formulated to kill organic growth like Gloeocapsa Magma (those ugly black streaks) at the root rather than just blasting the surface clean.

3. Standing Too Close to the Surface
We get it, you want to see that dirt disappear instantly. But getting too close with a pressure wand is a recipe for disaster.
- The Mistake: Holding the nozzle just inches away from the siding. This creates "wand marks" or "tiger stripes" that are often permanent. It also forces water into soffit vents and under the laps of your siding, which can lead to mold growth inside your attic or walls.
- The Fix: Maintain a distance of at least 12 to 18 inches. Move the wand in steady, overlapping strokes. Always keep the wand pointed slightly downward to prevent water from going up and under the siding panels.
4. Skipping the Prep Work
You wouldn’t paint a room without moving the furniture and laying down drop cloths, right? House washing is no different.
- The Mistake: Diving straight into the washing without securing the area. This leads to soggy patio cushions, fried outdoor electronics, and chemically burned hydrangeas.
- The Fix: Spend 30 minutes preparing your workspace.
- Close all windows and doors tightly.
- Cover outdoor outlets and light fixtures with plastic and tape.
- Move potted plants and furniture away from the house.
- Saturate nearby plants with fresh water before, during, and after the cleaning process to protect them from any cleaning solution runoff.

5. Failing to Inspect the Home First
Before you start, you need to know what you’re working with. A house wash can quickly turn into a repair job if you don't look closely.
- The Mistake: Spraying over loose siding, cracked window seals, or damaged mortar. High-volume water will find the path of least resistance, and that’s usually straight into your living room.
- The Fix: Take a walk around your home. Look for areas where the caulking is failing or where siding is "unzipped." If you find damage, repair it before you wash. This is also a great time to check your gutters; if they’re overflowing, you might need a professional gutter cleaning first.

6. Using the Wrong Nozzle
Those little colored tips that come with your pressure washer aren't just for show. They serve very specific purposes.
- The Mistake: Using the "Red Tip" (0-degree nozzle) on your house. This tip creates a laser-like stream of water that can cut through wood, plastic, and even skin. It should almost never be used on a residential home.
- The Fix: For most house washing tasks, the Black Tip (soap nozzle) is used to apply the cleaner, and the White Tip (40-degree nozzle) or Green Tip (25-degree nozzle) is used for a gentle rinse. Understanding the color-coding is essential for safety.
7. The "Half-Baked" Rinse
The job isn't done just because the green algae is gone. The rinse is arguably the most important part of the process.
- The Mistake: Leaving soap residue on the siding or windows. When the sun hits leftover cleaning solution, it can "bake" onto the surface, leaving white filmy streaks that are incredibly hard to remove later.
- The Fix: Rinse, rinse, and rinse again. Start from the top and work your way down. Please ensure you rinse the windows thoroughly, as soap residue can cause spotting. If you want that extra shine, you might even consider a professional window cleaning service to finish the job.
Why Maryland and Delaware Homeowners Trust Us
We know that your home is your biggest investment. Whether you’re in Dover, Delaware, or anywhere across Maryland, the coastal climate can be tough on your exterior. Salt air, high humidity, and heavy pollen counts mean that mold and mildew are constant battles.
Doing it yourself can be a fun weekend project, but it also carries risks to your property and your personal safety. Ladders are dangerous, and high-pressure water is a powerful tool that requires experience to handle correctly.
At Chesapeake Hydro-Wash, we’ve perfected the "Safety First" soft wash approach. We use specialized equipment that allows us to clean your home from the safety of the ground, using about the same pressure as a garden hose. Our custom-blended solutions do the heavy lifting, ensuring a deeper, longer-lasting clean without the risk of damage.
